Description
Explore the Science of: Molecular Self-Assembly, Surface Modification, Macroscopic Changes from Nanoscale features
Self-Assembly is a key tool in the up and coming field of Nanotechnology and represents the future in dozens of cutting edge fields. The Asemblon Nanotechnology Self-Assembly Kit provides a tangible, visible demonstration of how self-assembly can change the chemistry of a surface. The monolayers formed by thiols are too small to visualize without very expensive equipment. To circumvent this problem this kit utilizes the ability of thiols to change the surface chemistry and produce a macroscopic change in the wetting behavior of the surface. The thiols used in this kit will make the areas where you write hydrophilic so that they trap water, while the rest of the slide remains hydrophobic. This dramatic contrast clearly shows that the surface chemistry has changed by the addition of only a single monolayer of molecules. As you will see, this change is very rapid and can be repeated time after time by following the procedures outlined in the kit materials.
;
Write with molecules that capture water on the surface.
See what you wrote written in water!
